Penfolds Grange 2018 Magnum
Penfolds Grange 2018 Magnum
Tasting notes from the producer:
Colour: The wine has a radiant deep red colour with a black core on the rim.
Nose: The aroma is unmistakably Grange with a fresh and bold character. It opens with a strong note of piercing volatile acidity, followed by a pulsating blend of formic acid and barrel-ferment scents. The aroma then reveals layers of ripe blackberries and blackcurrant reduction, interlaced with fennel, anise, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and cola. As the aroma unfolds, it also reveals subtle hints of charcoaled lamb fat, raw wagyu carpaccio, caper berries, and a complexing mahogany/piano-polish/lacquer note derived from the earth. The aroma is balanced by a blackened veil of hydrocarbon shoe polish/sootiness/coal dust and slate.
Palate: The wine has a balanced and poised palate, with familiar flavours of Black Forest Cake and trifle, including chocolate, custard, bright wild raspberry, and redcurrant. The palate also offers less-obvious flavour distractions, such as mushroom pâté/duxelles, beefy accompaniment, and sarsaparilla. The wine has a tactile overdose, with omnipresent and even tannins, mouth-coating acidity, oak, and fruit. The mid-palate is convex, offering upfront palate grip and a continuum of delight that extends to the lengthy and lingering finish. The wine is truly 'alive', and with air and time, it will continue to evolve over the next half-century. A second tasting note may be warranted in the future to capture its full complexity.
