In 1964, Jim Barry secured 70 acres of premium land from Duncan McRae Wood, embarking on his winemaking journey by planting his inaugural vineyard with Shiraz. It was a decision marked by foresight, as both the grape variety and the location proved to be ideal. The McRae Wood Shiraz stands as a hallmark of Clare Valley Shiraz, characterized by its richness, potency, and lavishness, attributes that stem from mature, low-yielding vines.

The 1999 vintage was particularly outstanding. A dry summer, coupled with timely rains just before harvest, ensured optimal vine health, a factor clearly reflected in the wine's opulent fruitiness and deep hue.
